The Lake Isle of Innisfree

Thinking about the Poem

I. 1. What kind of place is Innisfree? Think about:

(i) the three things the poet wants to do when he goes back there (stanza I);

Answer: The poet wants to build a small cabin made of clay and twisted sticks (wattles), plant nine rows of beans, and set up a hive for honeybees.

(ii) what he hears and sees there and its effect on him (stanza II);

Answer: He sees the misty mornings, the glimmer of midnight, and the purple glow of noon. He hears the song of the cricket and the fluttering wings of the linnet. The effect of these natural sights and sounds is that they bring him profound peace.

(iii) what he hears in his “heart’s core” even when he is far away from Innisfree (stanza III).

Answer: Deep within his heart, he constantly hears the gentle, low sounds of the lake water lapping against the shore.

2. By now you may have concluded that Innisfree is a simple, natural place, full of beauty and peace. How does the poet contrast it with where he now stands? (Read stanza III.)

Answer: The poet contrasts the vibrant, natural beauty of Innisfree with the dreary, artificial environment of the city. While Innisfree offers glowing noons, glimmering midnights, and natural sounds, his current reality consists of standing on ordinary roadways and dull “pavements grey”.

I. 3. Do you think Innisfree is only a place, or a state of mind? Does the poet actually miss the place of his boyhood days?

Answer: Innisfree serves as both a real physical location and a state of mind representing inner peace. The introduction notes that Innisfree is a real place where the poet “spent a lot of time as a boy,” confirming he genuinely misses the actual physical location of his childhood. However, because he holds onto its sounds in his “deep heart’s core” while standing on grey city pavements, it also functions as a mental sanctuary he can retreat to for comfort.

II. 1. Look at the words the poet uses to describe what he sees and hears at Innisfree

Answer:

(i) bee-loud glade : This creates an image of a vibrant, open clearing in the woods filled with the gentle, rhythmic humming of busy honeybees.

(ii) evenings full of the linnet’s wings : This evokes a visual of a twilight sky alive with the fluttering movement of small birds returning to their nests.

(iii) lake water lapping with low sounds : This creates a calm, auditory picture of tiny, gentle waves rhythmically washing up against the shoreline.

2. Look at these words;

……….. peace comes dropping slow

Dropping from the veils of the morning to where the cricket singsWhat do these words mean to you? What do you think “comes dropping slow … from the veils of the morning”? What does “to where the cricket sings” mean?

Answer: These lines suggest that tranquility arrives gradually and softly in nature. It is “peace” that comes dropping slow from the “veils of the morning,” which metaphorically refers to the morning mist, fog, or dew. “To where the cricket sings” means this peace settles all the way down from the misty sky to the grass and earth where the crickets reside and make their music.

2. How does the poet describe the visual atmosphere of the different times of day at Innisfree?

Long Answer Question

1. Explain how the poet highlights the contrast between his physical surroundings and his emotional desires.

Answer: The poet emphasizes a strong contrast between the noisy, artificial city and the peaceful isolation of nature. Physically, he is trapped standing on a harsh “roadway” or dull “pavements grey,” but emotionally, he yearns to live entirely alone in a “bee-loud glade”. By planning to build a simple cabin made of clay and wattles and grow his own beans, he expresses a deep desire for self-sufficiency and tranquility away from modern society. Even though he remains in the city, the memory of nature—specifically the low sounds of lake water lapping—provides a constant mental escape deep within his “heart’s core”.
