Ans: Her deafness was first noticed when she was eight years old, when she did not respond while playing the piano.

1. How does Evelyn hear music?

Ans: Evelyn Glennie hears music through vibrations instead of her ears. Though profoundly deaf, she learned to sense sounds through different parts of her body. She feels higher notes from the waist up and lower notes from the waist down. While playing the xylophone, vibrations pass through the sticks into her fingertips. By leaning against drums and performing barefoot on wooden platforms, she feels the resonance through her body. Through continuous practice and determination, Evelyn trained her mind and body to respond to vibrations, enabling her to experience and express music beautifully despite her disability.
