1. Let’s see how much you have understood the story. Answer the questions:

फै जों नायदिनि नोंथाङा सल’खौ बेसेबां बुजिखो। सोंलुफोरनि फिन्नाय हो:

(a) Who was the leader of the boys in their adventure on uruka night?

उरुका मोनानि गोमोथाव हाबाआव हौवासाफोरनि दैदेनगिरिया सोरमोन?

Answer : Mahen was the leader of the boys. (महेनआ हौवासाफोरनि दैदेनगिरिमोन।)

(b) What were the names of Mahen’s friends?

(महेननि लोगोफोरनि मुंफोरा मा मामोन?)

Answer : His friends were Sanju, Nantu, Rinku and Rumon.

बिनि लोगोफोरा जाबाय सन्जु, नान्टु, रिंकु आरो रुमन।

(c) What did Mahen and his friends propose to do on uruka night?

Answer : They proposed to spend the night in the bhelaghar and later go to pick vegetables for another feast.

(d) What was the age old custom that Mahen was referring to?

Answer : The age old custom was going to pick vegetables from others’ gardens on Uruka night.

Answer : Mahen agreed happily and got excited about the adventure.

Answer : After the feast, they waited till midnight and then went out for their adventure.

Answer : Shantiram was a retired army man who loved farming.

(h) Why was Shantiram sitting wrapped in a black blanket? Where was Shantiram sitting?

शान्तिरामआ मानो गोसोम कम्बल जोमनानै जिरायना दंमोन? शान्तिरामआ बबेयाव जिरायना दंमोन?

Answer : He was waiting to catch the boys who might come to steal vegetables. He was sitting in his garden.

बियो मैगं-थाइगं खावनो फैनाय सेंग्राफोरखौ हमनो नेनानै दंमोन। बियो गावनि बागानाव जिरायना दंमोन।

(i) What was the black heap of garbage that Mahen noticed?

महेनआ नुनाय दाखोर-दालाफोरनि गोसोम दोमोलआ मामोन?

Answer : It was actually Shantiram wrapped in a black blanket, not garbage.

बेयो थारैनो गोसोम कम्बल जोमनाय शान्तिराम, दाखोर-दाला नङा ।

(j) What made the night appear more haunting? मा जिनिस आ हरखौ बांसिन गिलु-बालु नुनाय खालामदोंमोन?

Answer : The screeching sound of the nightjar (owl) made the night more haunting. 

फेसानि हस्रिख्रावनाय सोदोबा हरखौ बांसिन गिलु-बालु खालामदोंमोन। 

(k) Why did the boys run away from the garden? हौवासाफोरा मानो बागाननिफ्राय खारलांदोंमोन?

Answer : Because they were frightened when the “black heap” suddenly moved towards them. 

मानोना बिसोर गिदोंमोन जेब्ला ‘गोसोम दोमोल’आ हरखाबनो बिसोरनि फारसे दावबोदोंमोन । 

(1) What happened when the boys were about to pick the vegetables?

Answer : The black heap suddenly jumped up and rushed towards them.
