Class 6 Science Chapter-11 Question Answer

SCERT Class 6 Science Chapter-11 Question Answer " Different States of Water (दैनि गुबुन गुबुन थाथाइ)"

Key Highlights: Chapter 11 – Different States of Water

1. Three States of Water & Phase Changes

Solid (Ice): Has a definite shape and volume; does not flow or spread out freely.

Liquid (Water): Has no fixed shape; takes the shape of its container, flows, and spreads out.

Gas (Water Vapour): Has neither a fixed shape nor volume; disperses in all directions throughout the available space.

Interchangeability: Water changes its state through heating or cooling.

  • Melting: Solid → Liquid (by adding heat).
  • Freezing: Liquid → Solid (by cooling).
  • Evaporation: Liquid → Gas (occurs continuously at room temperature and increases with heat).
  • Condensation: Gas → Liquid (occurs when warm vapour contacts a cool surface).
2. Factors Affecting the Rate of Evaporation
The speed at which water transforms into vapour depends on four primary conditions:
  • Surface Area: A larger exposed surface area increases the rate of evaporation (e.g., water evaporates faster from a wide plate than from a bottle cap).
  • Temperature: Higher temperatures accelerate evaporation (e.g., wet clothes dry faster under direct sunlight than in the shade).
  • Wind Speed: Stronger air movement speeds up evaporation (e.g., wet clothes dry quicker under a spinning fan or on a windy day).
  • Humidity (Air Moisture): Evaporation slows down when the surrounding air already holds high amounts of moisture (e.g., clothes take longer to dry on humid, rainy days).
Evaporative Cooling Principle
Evaporation absorbs ambient heat, producing a natural cooling effect.
Porous Earthen Pots (Matka): Microscopic pores allow small amounts of water to seep onto the outer surface. As this exterior moisture evaporates, it draws heat away from the pot, keeping the water inside cold.
Everyday Examples:
  • Applying hand sanitizer creates a cold sensation on the skin due to rapid evaporation.
  • Splashing water on courtyard floors cools the surrounding space during hot summer days.
  • Atmospheric Water Generators (AWGs) condense water vapour from ambient air to produce clean drinking water through controlled cooling.
Atmospheric Phenomena: Rain, Dew, Fog, and Snow
  • Clouds & Rain: Warm water vapour is lighter than surrounding air and rises upward. High in the atmosphere, cooler temperatures cause it to condense around suspended dust particles into microscopic droplets, forming clouds. When these droplets merge and grow too heavy, they fall to Earth as rain.
  • Fog: Forms near the ground when water vapour condenses into tiny floating water droplets in cold conditions, resembling low-hanging smoke.
  • Dew: Drops that appear overnight on cold surfaces (such as grass, leaves, or metal sheets) when airborne moisture condenses upon contacting them.
  • Hail / Snow: In extremely cold climates or elevated regions (0°C or below), condensing moisture freezes into ice particles, falling as snow or hail (e.g., in Tawang, Shimla, and Dehradun).
The Water Cycle and Water Conservation
The Water Cycle: The cyclic movement of water between the Earth’s surface and the atmosphere driven by continuous evaporation and condensation.
Global Distribution:
  • 75% (3/4) of the Earth’s surface is covered by water.
  • 97% is saline ocean and sea water, which is unfit for drinking.
  • Only 3 exists as freshwater (stored in glaciers, groundwater, rivers, and freshwater lakes).
Conservation Need: Because usable freshwater is severely limited while the human population continues to grow, protecting water bodies from pollution and practicing responsible water management is essential.
