Class 6 Science Chapter-9 Question Answer

SCERT Class 6 Science Chapter-9 Question Answer " Measurement of Length and Motion (लाउथाइनि जखा आरो खारथाइ)"

Key Highlights: Chapter 9 – Measurement of Length and Motion

1. Traditional Units of Measurement

Body-based Units: In ancient times, people measured lengths using body parts such as finger width (आसि), handspan (जलाइ — distance between the tip of the thumb and middle finger), and cubit (आखाइ — elbow to the tip of the middle finger).

Inconsistency: Because body proportions vary from person to person, these traditional units led to discrepancies and lacked reliability.

Historical Assamese Units:

  • Currency / Value: आना (Ana), सिक्का (Sikka), आदलि (Adali), खाउरि (Khauri).
  • Precious Metals (Gold/Silver): आना (Ana), त’ला (Tola), रति (Rati).
  • Mass / Weight: फुवा (Phuwa), सेर (Ser), बान (Ban), म’न (Mon).
  • Long Distances: य’जन (Yojan), क्र’श (Krosh).

2. Standard Units of Measurement (SI System)

Standard Unit: To eliminate global discrepancies, scientists adopted the International System of Units (SI Units). The SI unit of length is the metre (m).

Unit Relationships:

  • 1 kilometre (km) = 1000 metres (m)
  • 1 metre (m) = 100 centimetres (cm)
  • 1 centimetre (cm) = 10 millimetres (mm)

Standard Laboratory Rulers: Small rulers typically measure up to 15 cm, while long rulers measure up to 30 cm. The smallest measurable reading on a standard centimeter scale is 1 mm.

Unit Convention: Numerical measurements must always be accompanied by appropriate units (e.g., 1 cm).

3. Rules for Accurate Length Measurement

Ruler Placement: The scale must be placed parallel and close to the object being measured.

Eye Position (Avoiding Parallax Error): The eye must be kept directly and vertically above the mark to read it accurately. Viewing at an angle causes reading errors.

Measuring with Damaged/Broken Scales: If the zero mark is damaged or missing, align the starting end to an intact mark (e.g., 3 cm) and subtract it from the final reading (e.g., 13 cm – 3 cm = 10cm).

Measuring Curved Lines: Straight rulers cannot measure curves directly; a flexible measuring tape or a non-stretchable thread traced along the curve and then compared against a standard ruler must be used.

4. Reference Point (रिजाय बिन्दो)

Definition: A fixed point, position, or object relative to which the location or distance of another object is determined.

Distance Dependency: The measured distance and perceived position of any object depend entirely on the chosen reference point.

5. Concept of Rest and Motion

Rest (दिदोम थासारि): An object is said to be at rest if its position does not change relative to a reference point over time.

Motion (खारसुमै थासारि): An object is said to be in motion if its position changes relative to a reference point over time.

Relativity of Motion: Motion is relative. For example, passengers sitting inside a moving bus are at rest relative to each other, but in motion relative to trees on the roadside.

6. Types of Motion

Rectilinear Motion (हांखोआरि खारथाइ): Movement along a straight path.

Examples: A car moving on a straight road, a striker hitting a carrom coin straight, a fruit falling from a tree, or a train moving on a straight track.

Circular Motion (बेंखनारि खारथाइ): Movement along a circular path where the object rotates or revolves around a center.

Examples: Blades of a rotating ceiling fan, a child running around a circular track, or a stone/rubber ball tied to a string and whirled around.

Periodic / Oscillatory Motion (दिन्दौनाय खारथाइ): A back-and-forth (उन-सिगां) repetitive movement about a fixed position that recurs at regular intervals of time.

Examples: A swinging pendulum in a clock, a child on a playground swing (हैसा-मैसा), or a see-saw.
