Thinking about the Poem
I. 1. What are the things the wind does in the first stanza?
Ans: In the first stanza, the wind blows strongly and causes destruction. It breaks the shutters of windows, scatters papers, throws books down from the shelves, tears the pages of books, and brings rain again. The poet describes the wind as careless and destructive.
2. Have you seen anybody winnow grain at home or in a paddy field? What is the word in your language for winnowing? What do people use for winnowing? (Give the words in your language, if you know them.)
Ans: Yes, I have seen people winnow grain in paddy fields and at home. Winnowing is the process of separating grain from chaff using wind.
In our language it is called “Mai Jaonai (Mai Sibnai)”.
People usually use a winnowing basket (soop/khurpa) or trays for winnowing.
3. What does the poet say the wind god winnows?
Ans: The poet says that the wind god winnows weak things, frail houses, weak doors, crumbling wood, weak bodies, weak lives, and weak hearts. He destroys everything that is not strong.
4. What should we do to make friends with the wind?
Ans: To make friends with the wind, we should become strong. We should build strong houses, fix doors firmly, make our bodies strong through practice, and keep our hearts strong and steadfast. Strength helps us face challenges.
5. What do the last four lines of the poem mean to you?
Ans: The last four lines mean that wind destroys weak things but supports strong ones. Weak fires are blown out, but strong fires grow brighter. This teaches us that strength and determination help us survive and succeed in life.
6. How does the poet speak to the wind – in anger or with humour? You must also have seen or heard of the wind “crumbling lives”. What is your response to this? Is it like the poet’s?
Ans: The poet speaks to the wind with humour . He describes the destructive nature of the wind in a playful way rather than pure anger. I agree with the poet because I have also seen the wind destroying property mercilessly. The poet challenges the wind and wants to make himself strong so that he can face its attack. This shows that he believes strength helps us overcome difficulties.
