The Road Not Taken

Thinking about the Poem

I. 1. Where does the traveller find himself? What problem does he face?

Ans: The traveller finds himself in a yellow wood where two roads diverge.

He faces the problem of choosing one road because he cannot travel both, and he is unsure which path to take.

or

The traveller finds himself standing in a yellow wood, where two roads diverge.

His problem is that he can travel only one road and must choose between the two. Since both roads look almost the same, he feels confused and worried about which choice to make, knowing that once he chooses one path, he may never return to take the other.

2. Discuss what these phrases mean to you.

(i) a yellow wood

Ans: It means a forest in autumn, where the leaves have turned yellow.

(ii) it was grassy and wanted wear

Ans: It means less travelled and had not been used much.

(iii) the passing there

Ans: This refers to the act of people walking along that road.

(iv) leaves no step had trodden black

Ans: No one had walked on the leaves. The leaves were fresh and had not been crushed by anyone’s footsteps.

(v) how way leads on to way

Ans: One decision leads to another, and it becomes hard to return and change the choice.

3. Is there any difference between the two roads as the poet describes them

(i) in stanzas two and three?

Ans: No difference is shown. Both roads appear almost equally fair, grassy, and less worn. They seem equally attractive.

(ii) in the last two lines of the poem?

Ans: Yes, the poet presents the road he chose as less travelled, suggesting it was different from the other.

4. What do you think the last two lines of the poem mean? (Looking back, does the poet regret his choice or accept it?)

Ans: The last two lines mean that the poet’s choice has made a big difference in his life. Looking back, the poet accepts his choice and does not regret it, though he reflects on it thoughtfully.

II. 1. Have you ever had to make a difficult choice (or do you think you will have difficult choices to make)? How will you make the choice (for what reasons)?

Ans: (You can write yourselves )

Yes, everyone faces difficult choices, such as choosing between two hobbies or subjects. I would make such a choice by weighing the pros and cons and considering which path is better for my future goals rather than just following what others do.

2. After you have made a choice do you always think about what might have been, or do you accept the reality?

Ans: It is natural to wonder about “what might have been,” but it is better to accept the reality. Since “way leads on to way,” it is almost impossible to return to the original starting point, so one should focus on the path they are currently on.
