Ans: He would loudly demand tea and his newspaper in the drawing-room and ask for his boots to be removed.

(iii) on Sundays?

4. In what ways did Kezia’s grandmother encourage her to get to know her father better?

Ans: The grandmother sent Kezia to the drawing-room on Sunday afternoons for a nice talk and suggested Kezia make him a yellow silk pin-cushion as a birthday gift.

III. Discuss these questions in class with your teacher and then write down your answers in two or three paragraphs each.

1. Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?

Ans: Kezia wanted to please her father by making a pin-cushion as a birthday gift, on her grandmother’s suggestion. She worked on it with great excitement and hoped that her father would appreciate her effort and love.

However, while stuffing the pin-cushion, she tore some papers from her father’s room, not knowing they were important speech papers. When her father found this out, he became very angry and punished her severely. Thus, Kezia’s innocent attempt to please her father ended in displeasing him greatly.

2. Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. What kind of father was Mr Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?

Ans: Mr Macdonald was a loving, friendly, and playful father. Kezia saw him playing happily with his children in the garden, laughing with them and allowing them to climb on him. His children were comfortable with him and were not afraid of him.

In contrast, Kezia’s father was strict, serious, and unapproachable. He did not play with Kezia and showed little affection, which made her frightened of him. By comparing the two fathers, Kezia realised that there are different kinds of fathers—some loving and playful, and others strict.

3. How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy?

Ans: One night, Kezia’s mother fell ill and was taken to the hospital, leaving Kezia alone with her father. That night, Kezia had a nightmare and cried out in fear. Her father heard her cries, came to her room, and comforted her gently.

He took Kezia in his arms and let her sleep beside him. Kezia then realised that her father was tired and exhausted after working hard all day. This experience changed her feelings, and she began to see her father as a human being who needed love, care, and sympathy.
