1. Answer the following questions to check your understanding: 

(नोंनि बुजिनायखौ आनजाद नायनो थाखाय गाहायाव होनाय सोंथिफोरनि फिननाय हो।) 

 

(a)   Why did the people of  Chitolia  and the  neighbouring  villages panic? 

(चित’लिया आरो खाथि खालानि गामिफोरनि सुबुंफोरा मानो गिदोंमोन?) 

Ans:- The swelling water of the Brahmaputra continued rising. So, the people of Chitolia and neighbouring villages panicked. 

(ब्रह्मपुत्रनि दुखांनाय दैया बारायलांगासिनो दंमोन। बेनिखायनो, चित’लिया आरो खाथिखालानि गामिफोरनि सुबुंफोरा गिदोंमोन।) 

 

(b) What happened when the embankment at Chitolia villages was breached? 

(जेब्ला चित’लिया गामियाव बान्दो बायदोंमोन अब्ला मा जादोंमोन?) 

Ans:- When the embankment at Chitolia village was breached, huge waves of water broke into the village. The people huddled on roof tops of Chang-Ghars.

( जेब्ला चित’लिया गामियाव बान्दो बायदोंमोन अब्ला गामिनि सिङाव दैनि गिदिर गुथाल हाबदोंमोन। सुबुंफोरा चांघर (बैसां न’फोरनि) फोरनि उखुमफोराव ज’जादोंमोन।) 

 

(c) What action did Khagen and his classmates take to rescue the villagers of Chitolia? (खगेन आरो बिनि थाखोनि लोगोफोरा चित’लियानि गामियारिफोरखौ रैखा खालामनो मा राहा लादोंमोन) 

Ans:- To rescue the villagers of Chitolia Khagen and his classmates immediately made five rafts of banana truck and took Khagen’s boat and left for Chitolia.

(d) How did Khagen and Dambaru rescue Dr. Hatibaruah and Moni Baideu? 

(खगेन आरो दाम्बारूआ डाक्टर हातिबारुआ आरो मनि बैदेउखौ बोरै रैखा खालामदोंमोन?) 

Ans:-  In the semi-darkness of the evening, Khagen could see Moni Baidew’s head popping in and out of the water. Khagen was an expert swimmer. At once he dashed towards her and caught her by the arm. He helped her to keep afloat and carried to a mound. Thus, he rescued her. The doctor was also rescued and carried to the mound. (मोनाबिलिनि खावसे-सान्दुंआव, खगेनआ मनि बैदेवनि खर’खौ दैनि सिङाव आरो बायजोआव नायखौ नुनो मोनदोंमोन। 

 

(e) Why did the people of the village call Khagen ”The Prince of Panidihing”? 

Ans:- Khagen was a brave boy. He always stood by them in their needs. Besides, he has a knack for solving all kinds of problems. So, the people used to call Khagen “The prince of the Panidihing”.

(a) Who was Khagen? How old was he? 

Ans:- Khagen was a brave boy. He was a student of Nitaipukhuri College. He was seventeen years old. 

(b) ‘It rained heavily all week.’ What was the result? 

Ans:- As a result of heavy rainfall all week, the swelling of the Brahmaputra continued rising and finally the embankment at Chitolia village was breached. 

(c) “In moments, huge waves of water broke into the villages.” –what is this situation called? 

Ans:-  This situation is called “flood havoc”. 

(d) “ Khagen! You have saved our lives, given us a new life.” –Who said this? Why did he say this? 

Ans:- Dr. Hatibaruah said this. He said so because Khagen rescued him and his wife from being drowned in the flood.

Ans:- The boat took a U turn now and it began to move swiftly with the current. 

 

(e) Dambaru and the two other men somehow managed to catch ____________________ 

Ans:- Dambaru and the two other men somehow managed to catch hold of the capsized boat that had almost been swept away.
