(The history of Assam is rich, ancient, and diverse. It reflects the evolution of human society, culture, politics, and economy from the earliest times to the modern age. To understand this long historical journey clearly and systematically, historians have divided the history of Assam into four major eras: Pre-Historic Period, Ancient Period, Medieval Period, and Modern Period. Each era has its own distinctive features and played an important role in shaping Assam’s identity.)

(The Pre-Historic Period of Assam refers to the time before written records were available. Knowledge about this era comes mainly from archaeological discoveries such as stone tools, pottery, caves, and burial sites. This period helps us understand the earliest human activities in Assam.

Archaeological evidence suggests that early humans lived in Assam during the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic ages. Stone tools have been discovered in places like Dima Hasao, Garo Hills, Naga Hills, and the Brahmaputra valley, indicating human settlement. These early people depended on hunting, fishing, and food gathering for survival.

During the later part of the Pre-Historic Period, humans began practicing agriculture and domesticating animals. They started living in small communities and used polished stone tools. Pottery-making also developed, showing improvement in lifestyle and craftsmanship.

Although political structures did not exist during this period, the Pre-Historic era laid the foundation for later civilizations. It marks the beginning of human adaptation to Assam’s natural environment, rivers, forests, and fertile land.)

2. Ancient Period (गोजाम मुगा)
